In the world of football, the number 9 jersey is traditionally associated with prolific goal-scorers. However, Naija Ratels defender, Adeshina Tunmininu, has a special love for the number, despite playing in a defensive position. For her, it is more than just a number—it is a symbol of luck, motivation, and a deep personal connection.
On Wednesday, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, Tunmininu showed why the number 9 holds special significance for her. In Naija Ratels’ NWFL Premiership Matchday 4 clash against Robo Queens, she stepped up to score a crucial penalty, helping her team secure a 2-2 draw in a fiercely contested match.
The defender, who previously played for DreamStars Ladies FC, described the moment as one of great joy. Having long desired to score against Robo Queens, she was elated to finally do so, even though her ultimate goal was to lead her team to victory.
"It’s a joyful moment for me to score against them. I motivated myself for this game, hoping to help my team win, but we will take the draw like that," Tunmininu told Sports247 after the match.
Tunmininu's determination to perform well against Robo Queens is deeply rooted in her past experiences. Having started her career with DreamStars Ladies in Lagos, she recalled how her former club often struggled against Robo Queens. This history fuels her competitive spirit whenever she faces them.
"Sure, I always have it in my mind to get revenge against Robo Queens. Anytime I play against them, I want to score. Even if I don’t score, I give my hundred percent to help my team win. Today, I am happy I scored," she said.
Despite playing as a left-back, Tunmininu’s attacking instincts remain sharp. Her preference for the number 9 jersey is a reflection of her early years in football, when she started out as an outside-left attacker before being converted to a defender.
"I just love wearing number 9. The love for the number comes naturally. It has been a lucky number for me, even as a defender," she explained.
While many defenders opt for numbers traditionally associated with their positions, Tunmininu’s choice sets her apart. It serves as a reminder of her attacking origins and continues to bring her good fortune on the pitch.
As the NWFL season progresses, Naija Ratels will be looking to build on their performances, with Tunmininu playing a key role in both defense and attack. Whether through her defensive contributions or moments of brilliance in front of goal, her love for jersey number 9 remains unwavering.
With her passion and determination, Tunmininu is proving that football is not just about sticking to conventions—it is about making personal choices that inspire confidence and success on the field.
