The second edition of the Halimatu Ayinde Women’s 5-a-side Football Cup concluded in spectacular style as Gallant Queens emerged victorious, defeating Ysfon Queens 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time. The championship decider took place on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at the Muritala Square Stadium in Kaduna.
In the earlier third-place match, Kundenda Queens displayed dominance, routing Wisdom Queens 4-0 to claim the bronze medal. The result was a testament to their strong performance throughout the tournament.
A novelty match added a touch of excitement to the day, with SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin inspiring Kaduna SWAN to a 2-1 victory over the Friends of Halimatu Ayinde. The entertaining clash delighted fans and highlighted the camaraderie surrounding the tournament.
Kundenda Queens’ Beluaa Adeboyega was recognized as the Young Player of the Tournament, while her teammate Queen Akungolaju stole the spotlight by winning the Highest Scorer award with eight goals and being named Player of the Tournament. These accolades underscored Kundenda Queens’ individual brilliance despite finishing third.
Ysfon Queens’ Augustina Boniface was awarded Best Goalkeeper for her stellar performances, while Wisdom Queens’ coach, Mrs. Grace, received the Best Coach award. Favour Johnson was named Fan of the Tournament, highlighting the vibrant and supportive atmosphere that surrounded the event.
For their triumph, Gallant Queens took home a cash prize of ₦150,000, while Ysfon Queens earned ₦100,000 as runners-up. Kundenda Queens received ₦50,000 for their third-place finish, reflecting the organizers’ commitment to rewarding excellence in women’s football.
Gallant Queens’ coach, Adebiyi Adekunle, praised his team’s determination and resilience. “The players showed incredible composure to win the title against tough opposition. I’m proud of their effort and teamwork,” he stated.
Rosengard forward and Nigeria international Halimatu Ayinde, the tournament’s patron, expressed her joy at the competition’s success. “This event is about empowering women through football, and it’s heartwarming to witness the talent and passion displayed,” she said.
The finals drew a large crowd, including dignitaries like Nigeria Volleyball Federation President Musa Nimrod, SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin, and government officials. They commended the initiative for its role in developing grassroots sports, particularly women’s football.
Tournament organizer Grace John extended heartfelt thanks to the Kaduna State Government, stakeholders, and the media for their support in making the event a success. She emphasized that the competition reaffirmed Ayinde’s vision of promoting women’s football and fostering grassroots development in Nigeria.
