On Monday, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced the suspension of two match officials participating in the ongoing Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship held in Calabar, Cross River State. The decision affects Referee Amamong Idongesit Anthony from Akwa Ibom and Assistant Referee Blessing Nwika from Rivers. Both officials have been withdrawn from the NWFL Championship with immediate effect.
The suspension follows concerns raised about the officiating during Match Number 9 of the Championship. This match, which took place on Sunday, September 1, 2024, featured Imo Striker Queens and Pelican Stars at the UJ Esuene Stadium. The NFF’s review of the match concluded that the conduct of both referees undermined the integrity of the refereeing process, the NWFL Championship, and the sport as a whole.
In addition to being removed from the ongoing Championship, Referee Anthony and Assistant Referee Nwika have been suspended from all refereeing activities until further notice. They have been instructed to vacate the refereeing camp immediately, as directed by the NWFL Championship coordinator.
The NFF’s decisive action underscores its commitment to upholding high standards of fairness and integrity in its competitions. The Federation has emphasized that it will continue to address any form of misconduct by match officials to ensure that the integrity of the sport is preserved.
