On August 6, 2024, Governor Dr. Alex Otti OFR of Abia State extended his congratulations and unwavering support to the Abia Warriors Football Club during a special reception held in their honor. The event celebrated the team's historic achievement of reaching the finals of the 2023/2024 FA Cup, where they secured the runner-up position—a first for the club.
Governor Otti expressed profound pride and joy in the team's accomplishment. He emphasized that the achievement of reaching the finals was, in his view, a victory in itself. The Governor praised the players, management, and board for their exceptional performance, noting that their efforts had brought significant pride to both himself and the state.
"Thank you very much for joining me to receive the gallant warriors of Abia Warriors," Governor Otti stated. "I was very pleased as I watched you inch to the finals. As far as I was concerned, when you got to the finals, you had won, and the least that could happen was for you to be first runner-up, which is exactly what you are."
The Governor also acknowledged the sentiments expressed by the club’s chairman regarding the team's close finish, remarking that despite any perceived misfortune, finishing as the runner-up was a monumental achievement. He assured the players that their remarkable performance would be a stepping stone for future successes. "Clearly, I can say without any fear of contradiction, the next time around, you will lift the FA Cup," he declared.
Governor Otti reiterated his commitment to supporting the team both financially and logistically. He assured the players that his administration would continue to provide the necessary resources and opportunities to help them reach new heights. He pledged to address the team's needs, including the provision of a coaster bus by the following week and other items on their wish list as resources permit.
In addition to his verbal assurances, Governor Otti announced a substantial donation of N30 million to the players on behalf of the state government. He personally contributed N5 million through the Alex Otti Foundation. Support for the team also came from other notable figures: former Chief of Army Staff Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika donated N10 million, Senator Darlington Nwaokocha provided N5 million, and Engr. Chinedu Onyeizu contributed N2.5 million.
The reception was attended by key members of the state government, including the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu; the Hon. Commissioner for Sports, Sir Nwaobilor Nwadimma Ananaba; the Hon. Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu; and several other officials, all of whom joined Governor Otti in celebrating the team’s achievements and expressing their support.
As the Abia Warriors reflect on their historic FA Cup run and look ahead to future competitions, the backing from Governor Otti and the Abia State Government provides a strong foundation for continued growth and success.
