Sevilla FC and the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) have officially embarked on a collaborative partnership aimed at enhancing football development and coaching standards. This significant agreement underscores Sevilla FC's commitment to extending its influence and expertise internationally, with a particular focus on Nigeria, a country rich in football talent and enthusiasm.
The partnership was formally announced following a visit from NPFL President Gbenga Elegbeleye to Sevilla FC. During this visit, Elegbeleye met with Sevilla FC President José MarÃa del Nido Carrasco and toured the club's renowned Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium. The visit also included a comprehensive tour of Sevilla's training facilities at the Ciudad Deportiva José Ramón Cisneros Palacios, where the foundations for the new collaboration were laid.
José MarÃa del Nido Carrasco expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing Sevilla FC’s dedication to nurturing football talent and advancing the sport globally. “We are very happy to be able to work with the Nigerian Professional League,” Carrasco stated. “Sevilla FC is convinced that this alliance can help NPFL clubs to continue improving and encourage the development of youth players. It is a new decisive step in our internationalization process and will help our brand to continue to grow in Africa, in a country like Nigeria from which we are receiving a lot of support after the signing of Chidera Ejuke.”
The collaboration is designed to offer extensive support in various areas, with a strong emphasis on coach training and youth player development. The NPFL, which comprises 20 clubs, each with its own youth academy, stands to benefit significantly from Sevilla FC’s extensive experience and successful track record in both domestic and European competitions. The arrangement includes provisions for promising young players from Nigeria to train at Sevilla FC’s facilities, thereby enhancing their skills and experience.
Gbenga Elegbeleye, the NPFL President, highlighted the mutual benefits of the agreement, stating, “We have 20 clubs in the Nigerian Premier League and they all have their own youth academies. I know the history and track record of Sevilla FC. This is a very good club which has won trophies in Spain and Europe for many years. I feel that, with their development strategy and their youth development programme, Nigeria can benefit.”
Elegbeleye further explained the anticipated impact of the partnership, noting that the best players from the Nigeria Youth League would have the opportunity to train at Sevilla FC. This exposure and training are expected to significantly improve their skills, which will be advantageous for both the players and their home clubs upon their return.
Additionally, the agreement includes a training initiative for NPFL coaches, aiming to elevate the overall coaching standards within the league. “We believe that the best players in the Nigeria Youth League will be able to come here every season to train. With your help and training, when they return, they can become better players. We also have a training agreement for our coaches that will be positive for us. It is a win-win arrangement for everyone in the NPFL,” Elegbeleye added.
